More Letter Love

Joanne Sharpe's Letter Love online class is almost over (sob). She promises another lettering class in April, so we'll all be waiting as patiently as possible for that.There are at least 400 students in the class! We've created little booklets using our own patterned Bristol or watercolor paper, and patterned washi or "duck" tape. Now we're filling the pages with colorful lettering. One of the techniques Joanne showed us was to outline a word on the patterned paper we created, cut out around the connected letters, and adhere it to a contrasting background. In the image below, the original word color was the green one. I scanned it into PSE (you knew I would!) and recolored it two different ways. I'm again attempting to show it here without a background (fingers crossed).

Sunday Postcard Art: Birthstone (Opal)

Opal is the birthstone for my October, my birthday month. The oval in the background of this digital piece is from a photo of an opal (Google images). The woman is from Dover Designs (black and white image colored by me). The textured background is from an original painted journal page of mine. The stonework borders are from Hero Arts.

I may have finally figured out how to post an image here without the background/border. I just realized I can add a PNG image here, instead of the usual JPG image. PNG images have a transparent background, so you would just see the image on top of whatever color my blog background is. So....here goes. If there's no white rectangular background around the colorful words you see below...it worked!

Inspiration Avenue: Textures

I love to play with textures in Photoshop Elements. For this challenge, I started with a photo I had taken in Israel of some grass with an unusually fuzzy texture (I believe it was at the Baha'i Gardens near Haifa). I applied some Photoshop Elements effects, among other techniques. I altered and added the door image from Last Door Down the Hall and the woman's figure from Stampington (originally in sepia); and I used digital tree and lace brushes from Obsidian Dawn. (Don't know the source for the crumpled paper background.)

Our challenge this week was to create a collage that goes "outside the frame" in some way, and that has a bird theme. I used a rectangular autumn-hued background from Kaylene Maalste, and bird images from Last Door Down the Hall. I put these two images on a background the same (or similar) color as my blog background. Hope it worked!

I'm taking Joanne Sharpe's online class "Letter Love" this month. It's a lesson a day for the whole month of February! It's wonderful to wake up each day to a new and colorful and cheerful video from Joanne. There's a Facebook group, a Flickr group, and a Yahoo group for the class too. This week we were challenged to use the color Tangerine Tango in a collage. According to the Pantone Color Institute, “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

I chose to create a floral piece in dark and dramatic tones. I achieved this effect by digitally layering an image of a rose with three backgrounds of my own creation. Our challenge this week was to create a vintage-style piece of art in "Moo" format. What is a Moo, you ask? According to the challenge instructions, a Moo is a tiny card - template measurement 1.10 x 2.80 inches (2.79 x 7.11 mm) or thereabouts. I believe it's about half the size of a business card. For my digital collage, below, I created and displayed three "Moos" in a vintage lady-and-flowers theme.

So-artful Challenge: Ceil Chapman Inspired

This is a serendipitous challenge for me! We were challenged to create art inspired by the 1950's fashion designer Ceil Chapman, using pink, black, and/or silver. I was not familiar with her name, so of course turned to the Internet for guidance and found some lovely photos of her fashions. And since I'm in the middle of Jane Davenport's online class, I "Heart" Drawing (where we're learning some elements of fashion figure drawing as a supplement to one of her earlier classes), I was inspired to create my own little sketch of a vintage Ceil Chapman dress. There are touches of silver in the trim of the dress, although they don't show up well on the scan.

For this weekly Flickr challenge, in which we've been creating digital art in the style of various artists; this week's choice is Michelle Caplan, a mixed media artist in the U.S. She combines vintage photos, newsprint, and papers/fabrics. I had a blast doing my digital collage! Some background info is below.

This is a heritage collage, featuring an old photo of my Aunt Mynne (left) and my Mom (right) doing their very entertaining version of the old song "Egyptian Ella." They performed this with gusto and much laughter at many a family gathering. Thanks to the Internet, I found the lyrics! In the background, there's a photo of my father on the mantel, and a painting of me and my twin sister (painted by my mother) on the wall behind her.

We were challenged to illustrate a dream or nightmare that we've had. I have a recurring dream (not too often, thankfully) that I'm wandering around a huge parking lot unable to find my car. The dream seems to go on forever, and when I wake up I can still feel some of the anxiety from the dream. This collage represents what it feels like.

Collage Obsession: Number 13

Our inspiration this week was to use the "unlucky" number 13 as our collage theme. My digital piece was inspired by ancient maps showing the fearsome creatures that a traveler might encounter in those times.
